Bangalore's Evening Skies

To see a world in a grain of sand

And heaven in a wild flower

Hold infinity in the palm of your hand

And eternity in an hour.

- William Blake.

Tourists travel long distances to watch sunrises and sunsets, to experience the bliss of that moment when the beauty of God's creation leaves you spellbound and exhilarated. They wake up at unearthly hours to be able to reach the exact place from where they can catch the first rays of the rising sun. I am not lucky enough to be living in a flat from where I could see the sun rise. But I have been blessed with a balcony facing west, and I say blessed, because watching the evening sky from the same vantage point during sunset is a daily treat, served to me on a platter.

Nature's magnificence is before my very eyes every single day. I never cease to marvel at the ever changing hues, the patterns that clouds make on an otherwise colourless sky.The sky which seems so serene and blue during the day, by evening takes on shades that have distinct characteristics, with mood changes from fiery and brilliant to sombre, from warm and comforting to menacing and depressing.

The canvas that is the sky before me, painted different every single day, serves to remind me that life is a flow, that nothing is static and that change and growth is the very essence of life. Everything in the outside world is ephemeral. And yet, the sun sets, only to rise again the next day in all its brilliance.

The sky in its expansiveness and nature in its awesomeness can hardly be captured by the lowly camera. But there is such a strong desire to capture the fleeting incredible moment, lock it in one's memory, and share it with others. And so this attempt, however humble.
